I remember Panzeries well. I'd call there to spend my pocket money after visiting my grandparents in Woodlands Road each Sunday morning. Performers visiting the Eden Theatre would lodge in rooms above or adjacent to the shop. Next door was Tommy Harle's newsagents shop. Bakers newsagents was on the other side of the bridge carrying the railway over Prince's Street.
There were numerous "corner" shops around the area in the 50's. Here's a few I remember. In Grey Street, Dockrays (on the corner of Durham St), Dunhills butchers, Charltons bakery and Walter Paley's on the right after the High Durham St junction. In Gibbon Street stood Blacketts (next to the church), Harry Scotts fish & chips, Evans, with Maughan's and Tweddle's at the top of lower Edward Street.
At the bottom of Nelson Street was Bentleys, also known as Mary Maddison's. In Braithwate Street at no. 3 was Denton's (later Allinsons, Longstaffs and Hoppers).
Tuers was at the bottom of Lindsay St, Flowers just over the other side of Latherbrush bridge, Leylands in Tenters Street. I'm almost sure that there was a shop of sorts between Dunhills and Bakers in Prince's Street too. Jackson's butchers was almost opposite Dunhills.
The ice cream factory in Braithwaite Street was owned by the same Rea family who now run the Rio Bar in Tenters Street. Dominic and his wife lived at 91 Prince's Street, and after his death the business continued to thrive under the direction of his sons Frankie and Tommy. I lived next door to the factory and both my brother and I worked on the vans on a Sunday to supplement the wages from our full time jobs (more beer money).
The rec was heaven in the 50's, and it's really irritating to see that its potential has never been properley exploited since.

Hi Margaret. We obviously trod the same path at some time in the 50s I remember well the milk bottling plant and the brass drinking cup at the fountain in the rec, always made the water taste funny I thought, but it was a welcome drink after the exhaustive efforts on the swings and ocean wave further up in the rec. we used to leave by the gate near the station go along the walled path to the slaughter house and watch through the grill in the wall, the things we did eh!! makes my blood run cold to think of the exploits we used to get up to. but happy memories all.
