Last gas street light

The last one I'm aware of was up an alleyway on the North side of High Bondgate and it was still there in about 1972/3.
There were others which lasted nearly as long in places like Gib Chare. The timers which lit them were clockwork so, whilst they didn't need lighting every night, a man needed to come round about once a week to wind up the timer, check the gas mantle and wipe the glass.
I'm guessing that any remaining gas lights disappeared when they changed from coal gas to North Sea gas in the early 70s.

I have no idea when the last gas lamp was removed but do recall the location of most lamps in the area that I lived as a child. They were meeting places and focal points for our street games during the dark nights of autumn and winter. The old lamp posts were few and far between compared to the new electric street lights. The gas light maintenance man would often leave the little white box that had contained any new mantle he'd just fitted on the path. Wouldn't be allowed nowadays.

Amazing - I'd completely forgotten about those white boxes - sometimes they were stuffed into the curly bits of ironwork at the top of the post under the lamp

I don't know if it's the same one but I remember a gas light in my Grandfather's yard (Kilburns Yard) which was on the north side of High Bondgate. I was born in '64 so it must have been about the time Mark was talking about.

I lived for a time in Close House and there were gas lights untill about 1966. Actually there might still be, knowing the place like I do! Ha!
