I can vaguely remember them - presumably they closed in the mid 70s when the new Wear Valley District Council moved out.

The only other public toilets I can remember were near the Escomb Road junction with Newgate Street just over the railway bridge.

now knocked down I believe..

other toilets were in Cockton Hill rec and town rec.

Before the days of McDonalds and pubs being open all day it was a case of the Coop, Doggarts or upstairs Cafe above Presto's (inshops now)

There were also some toilets just above the top bus stop at High Bondgate.

I must have gone past these on my paper round which took me up the Sun Inn side of High Bondgate and down the other side ( not to mention Hexham Street, Bridge Street and Newton Cap Bank which still had houses in the 70s). I can't quite picture where you mean.

Hi, I think they were in the gardens in high bondgate, when we moved from Bishop to willington we had to get the bus from there and I remember having to rush to the toilets before the bus came.

Mark
They were behind the top bus shelter on Bondgate. The stop from which the Weardale left.I believe the Toft hill bus may have left from the same stop. There were three shelters there, the top one as described, the middle one for the United to Tow Law via. Crook & the bottom One for Willington.

Yes there were toilets to the side of the town hall. They were at the top of the Batts bank(Wear Chare),on the other side of the road from the Sportsman pub. They were underground, and much nicer than the ones in the bus station today.
